The Ruta de la Plata I

Culture Trails | 7 nights

The Ruta de la Plata Silver Route has been the natural route linking the Bay of Biscay with the Andalusian Atlantic coastline from olden times. Romans took advantage to build a road to transport precious silver, leaving behind the base of a major legacy taking you through history.

The route includes the following Paradores:

Zafra: First day

This route takes you through one of the country’s least known and most beautiful areas, and features endless surprises. Zafra gives you the opportunity to discover Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Church (13th-century), Grande Square, Santa Catalina Convent, Santa Clara Convent, El Rosario Convent and the Casa Grande de Zafra. Begin a journey for all your senses.

Mérida: Second day

Every sight you see in Emerita Augusta speaks of its splendid past, when it was part of the Roman Empire, and an active and flourishing colony. Faithful repositories of this legacy are the National Museum of Roman Art (Museo Nacional de Arte Romano), the theater, arena and Roman circus. You should not miss the Roman House of the Amphitheatre (Casa del Anfiteatro) and House of the Mithraeum (Casa de Mitreo), the archeological site at Santa Eulalia Church, the Roman bridge over the Guadiana River, and Los Milagros Aqueduct. The Arabs also left their mark on these lands with their citadel, as did the Visigoths, whose art you can discover in the Museum of Visigoth Art (Museo de Arte Visigótico).

Trujillo: Third and Fourth day

Extremadura expresses itself magically in this town. Trujillo, land of discovery, opens its gates to you in the Main Square (Plaza Mayor). Walking along its streets, you will discover the palace of the Dukes of San Carlos, the palace of the Marquises of La Conquista, and the palace of the Marquis of Sufraga. The old castle speaks of long-ago tales, as does the Pizarro House/Museum. Religious monuments also have an important place in the town, including San Martín Church, Santa María La Mayor Church and the convents of Santa Clara and San Francisco Real.

Jarandilla: Fifth day

The Parador de Jarandilla boasts an incomparable size and beauty, and is a very special setting-off point for visits to places such as Yuste Monastery, where Emperor Carlos V spent his last days. Other interesting visits include natural sites such as the Olla Gorge. We also recommend the towns of the Vera region, especially Valverde and Villanueva.

Plasencia: Sixth and seventh days

Plasencia is the final stage of our journey along this stretch of the Ruta de la Plata, a gift to you in your last hours in the lands of Extremadura, a gift to enjoy by visiting such sights as the two cathedrals: New and Old. Around the cathedrals you will find many lovely spots. The Main Square (Plaza Mayor), with its bustling activity, the Episcopal Palace, the palace of the Marquises of Mirabel, Carvajal-Girón Palace and Las Torres Palace, and San Vicente Ferrer Convent are other highlights of the city.
